Tribute to Artist, James Cameron Smith

It is with great sadness that I share the news of James Cameron Smith's unexpected passing on October 28, 2026.

I first met James in September 2019 when the FAC started work on our very first initiative in Fenelon, The Sculpture Project. His work, Portage, was selected by the jury as one of two permanent public art sculptures for the Rain Garden at Garnet Graham Beach Park. He was successfully juried into The Downtown Sculpture Exhibition 2024 with Raven, in 2025 with Sovereign Dominion, and in 2026 with Darner. He was incredibly generous with his knowledge, experience, and passion for all things art. I am so grateful to have known this wonderful man, worked with him, and learned from him.

I'm struggling to find the words to say what he meant to me. Instead I shall remember geeking out about art together, laughing a lot, and being in awe of his generosity and kindness. He gave me the biggest and best hug at the public launch earlier this year. We joked together that he was now a tradition in Fenelon and one that we both looked forward to year after year. I will miss you, sweet friend. Thank you for being you and sharing your art with all of us. Much love, always. 💔
